In May 2022 Drax submitted an application to Scottish Ministers under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989, seeking permission for the construction and operation of an electricity generating station. The proposals are an expansion of the existing Cruachan Pumped Storage Hydro-electric (PSH) generation station, and will be capable of operating independently. The image above shows the proposed ‘Cruachan 2’ station alongside the existing ‘Cruachan 1’ station.
Additional information was submitted by Drax to Scottish Ministers in December 2022. This includes information relating to Heritage, Ecology, Transport, Hydrology and Ground Conditions.

The application has been registered by the Energy Consents Unit of the Scottish Government and the documents below are also provided on their webpage. Formal comments on the proposals should be directed to the ECU and comments will be accepted until 8th February 2023.
